Did You Know...

Did you know that Elias Disney and Flora Call were married January 1, 1888 in Acorn, FL? What makes this even more interesting is that Acorn (which is no longer in existence) was only about 50 miles from where Walt Disney World is today? In fact, Elias Disney was a mailman in Kissimmee, FL for a short time.

Not long after their marriage the two moved to Chicago, IL where they started a family which included four sons - Herbert A. Disney, Raymond A. Disney, Roy O. Disney and Walter E. Disney, and one daughter - Ruth Flora Disney.  Elias, who became concerned about the growing crime rate in Chicago, moved the family to Marceline, MO in 1906.  Walt loved Marceline, the impact it had on his life is evident on Main Street USA in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

In 1938, Walt and Roy decided it was time to move their parents closer to them so they could watch their grandchildren grow up.  They purchased a house and moved their parents to North Hollywood, near their Burbank Studios.  Flora complained  to Walt and Roy about a faulty gas furnace in their new home,  so Walt sent repairmen from the studio to fix the gas leak.  Flora wrote to Ruth telling her how beautiful the house was but still complained of gas fumes, unfortunately the furnace had not been repaired properly.  Flora died of asphyxiation from gas fumes on November 6, 1938. Walt never forgave himself for his mother's death.

While Walt never actually lived in Florida, he certainly had strong roots planted there. Who knows, maybe his family heritage influenced him to choose Kissimmee for his Florida Project...

  1. I had no idea that Walt's mother passed in that manner. Poor Walt! On another note, I am so glad that he chose Florida for Disney World. It's the perfect location, and I cannot wait until Lexi gets old enough where we can take her on her 1st WDW vacation!
