Magical Blogorail Red...Using Social Media for Disney Trip Planning

Welcome to those of you joining me from My Dreams of Disney and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the 4th stop on our Magical Blogorail.

I remember planning our first trip to Walt Disney World in 2003 - yes my first trip was the year I turned 40 - yes I am ashamed!!  I didn't even think about using the internet to help me plan with the exception of "the" Disney site.  I wish I knew then what I know now...

I don't think I write this post without mentioning my fellow Blogorailer Dave at Your First Visit.  This site is full of great info, especially for a Walt Disney World rookie.  When's the best time to go?  How long should you stay?  How much should you budget?  What to do? Here's your one stop for all the answers.

My first foray into "boards" was DISboards.  There is a lot of information there, and you can get caught up in it and lose total track of time.   My favorite thing here is that you can find menus from all of the WDW restaurants.  I am a pretty picky eater and I love being able to see a menu before making ADRs.

AllEars, Mouse Savers and WDW Fan Zone are other great resources for park hours, special events, rehabs and general information about the parks.  Don't forget to visit the Magical Blogorail for all of our advice on vacation planning and fun things to do in the parks.

Ultimately for me you can't beat the Walt Disney World official website.  I love the info on the different resorts, activities, attractions, restaurants, and on and on and on.  Who knows Disney better than Disney?  The one thing I will say is do some research on using your snack credits, Disney mentions water and pop corn but you have so many more great options.

My last bit of advice is that Google and Bing or whatever search engine you use are your friend.  You will literally find hundreds of Disney blogs and websites out there to help you plan your next vacation.  Be sure to be specific in your search to get the best results, if your youngest is 16 you don't need toddler information.

Thank you for joining me today. Your next stop on the Magical Blogorail Loop Colorado Mountain Mom.

  1. Great suggestions! It's funny how our style of planning evolves, isn't it? My first trip (I was 17 at the time) was planned entirely around the Birnbaum's Guide. I still have a strong affection for that book!

    1. It was like my Walt Disney World bible for my first trip Heidi. I still love to read it and we definitely get one each time we are planning a WDW vacation.

    2. Oh how I used to love Birnbaum's! I still have the copy that my husband and I used to plan our honeymoon to WDW!

  4. I agree with Heidi- my how we evolve (or not)! I still can't pass a Birnbaum's or Passporter in the store without salivating like Pavlov's dog. I, too, can't believe how much time I used to spend on the DISboards Donna!!

    1. I am a Disney Planning Book junkie!! I love to just look at them and wish I was there. I don't go to DISboards much at all anymore, I get my Disney fix with all of my wonderful Disney friends now. :)

  5. DISboards is definitely a time-eater (in a good way!). I can spend hours browsing and totally lose track of time...

  6. I found myself spending way too much time on DISboards; took me a while to search other sites when I first started my online obsession. Google searching is clearly a priority for me as well; and MouseSavers has to be one of the best of the best out there for trip planning. Now that both you and I have mentioned Dave in a post, he'll be impossible to talk to!

  7. Wonderful suggestions! I love the DISboards too! When I first started reading them, I tended to stick to one section of the boards, but there's so much on there to read when you branch out. One of my favorites is the Creative DISigns board where graphic designers take time to help make other people's trips more magical by sharing (for free) personalized graphics for t-shirts, fish extenders, and an assortment of other cool ideas! I used to design t-shirts there myself. Now I stick to the cruise boards. ;-) I recommend the DIS for any newbies and vets to Disney as there are so many questions asked and answered there daily. Have you used their app? It's awesome!

    1. I wanted to go for so many years before the first trip, I really didn't think I was ever going to get the opportunity. Now if I can just start going more often...
