Mentoring Mondays - Managing Your Blogging Time

If I had to choose the thing I am worst at in my blogging life it would be time management.  I have all these great ideas running through my head, I just never seem to find the time to actually do them.  I feel like I am always running behind.

I don't believe I am the only blogger who feels this way, at least I hope not.  This week Mentoring Mondays is going to focus on improving our blogging skills.

Set Your Priorities
Get an old fashioned paper and pencil and write down your priorities.  Sounds simple enough, but most of us will not take the time to do it. So here are my priorities:

  1. Family-My family always comes first.  We have a home cooked meal every night and eat as a family at the dinner table, that is very important to me.  Saturday mornings are reserved for Dakota's guitar lesson, and add in the occasional gig here and there, mostly on Sundays. Then there are the unexpected things that come up.  In the past week alone, my husband has been sick with a really bad sinus infection, then Friday was 3+ hours in the emergency room with his kidney stone. Sometimes you can't help life getting in the way, but I know my blogging friends would expect me to take care of my family and miss a post.
  2. Work-I live 45+ miles from work, I work Monday - Friday 7:30-4:30.  I have to feed my family, buy gas, put a roof over our head.  I have to place work over blogging, it is an absolute necessity.
  3. Blog-For me, blogging is much like a hobby. It is how express myself creatively.  I love planning the Disney Party Boards each week and studying the Disney History for my Did you know...series.
  4. Social Networking-While I know I need to be better at tweeting and posting on Facebook, I believe my blog content is more important.
Once you have set your priorities accept them, and learn to let some things go.  Everyone will forgive you if you miss a post on your blog, but can you forgive yourself if you neglect your family to write a blog post?  Here is a great article about managing your blogging time from Riches Corner.

Stop Procrastinating
I will be honest, this is a big one for me.  I think I have plenty of time to get a blog post done, and put it off until later.  I REALLY need to work on this one.  I often find myself scrambling around to get a post finished in time or (like today) it's late.

Dynamo Writing Blog says it best in this post:
"Stop procastinating and write the damn paper already!"
In the post she talks about have an anxiety attack over a paper she had to write for college, while I realize we are talking about writing a blog post I think the principle still applies.  She also suggests you have 3 choices:

  1. Complain, whine and have an anxiety attack about it.
  2. Change it.
  3. Suck it up.
Get Rid Of Your Distractions
While most of us are not professional bloggers, I think we need to follow the philosophy set forth in this post from Famous Bloggers.  While writing your blog post(s) treat it like a job and avoid the following distractions:

  • Reading personal e-mails during "work" time.
  • Taking personal calls during "work" time.
  • Browsing the internet with no purpose in mind.
  • Allowing friends to visit during "work" time.
  • People entering your work area and causing you to lose your train of thought.
  • Browsing Pinterest, Facebook or Twitter (this one added by me, I know they distract me).
Set A Schedule
Did you know that if you are going to have just one blog post a week Monday is the best day to post it?  Eli Rose has a fabulous post on How to Create a Blogging Schedule.  It has a breakdown of each day of the work week and weekends.  It's insightful information.

Arkansas Women Bloggers have a post that is sure to convince you that setting a blogging schedule is a wonderful thing to do, Three Reasons I Love My Blog Schedule {Love Story} by Julie.  I will personally vouch for the fact that when you have a regular series on a set day of the week it makes posting a lot easier and much more consistent.

The articles I have referenced in this post are all a great read, I hope they will help all of us manage our blogging time a little better.

Have a Magical Day!!
