Mentoring Mondays - Melissa - Disney On Wheels

I am excited to bring you each and every Mentoring Mondays, but when I have the pleasure of featuring a friend it's really exciting for me.  Melissa from the Disney On Wheels blog is here today.  She was the first person to "like" my Disney Donna Kay facebook page, and her blog is one of the first I ever followed, and I am so happy to have her here today.

  1. Introduce yourself and describe your blog.
Hi! I’m Melissa from Disney on Wheels. I writing in February and I have learned so much from my fellow Disney bloggers. My blog covers a little bit of everything but my main focus is to provide information to readers who visit Walt Disney World in a wheelchair.
A little about me. I’m from Georgia, my favorite Disney animated movie is Alice in Wonderland, my favorite movie of all time is the The Godfather. I’m a pop culture addict so I love movies, music, books, and comics. I’m a little geeky.

  1. What inspired you to start blogging?
Since I have visited Walt Disney World several times using a wheelchair, I thought it would be fun to start a blog that gave tips to wheelchair users as well as show my love for all things Disney.

  1. I know you write for several other blogs including the Magical Blogorail Orange, how are these post different from your regular blog post?
I write for Chip and Company, The Info Mouse, and I have done a few guest posts here and there. I try my best to cover different topics for each or at least approach a topic from a different angle. I feel like I owe it to everyone that I write for to not repeat myself and to give them new content. They have given me a great opportunity and I want to use it well.
  1. If you could offer a new blogger one piece of advice, what would it be?
Network! The best way to gain readers and followers is to show a genuine interest in what other people are doing. Comment and follow other blogs, chat people up on twitter and Facebook. I found that once I had developed friendships with other bloggers, the readers followed. It is also how I learned a lot. I owe so much to my Disney blogging pals.

  1. You are so good about keeping your blog up to date and reader friendly.  Thinking in terms of design and function, what is your favorite thing about your blog?
A few months ago I decided to change the look of my blog and I love it. I just wanted something simple so my photos and content stood out. I also didn’t spend any money on the new look. I know a lot of people want to change things but don’t want to spend any money. It took a little work but it can be done. :)
  1. Do you have a “Go-To” topic for those times when you are having a hard time coming up with new topics to write about?
What I usually do if I am struggling to find a topic is to go back through my Disney vacation photos. So far its worked. I usually notice something that I missed before or remember something that I was planning on blogging about but I didn’t write it down so I forgot. That would be another tip, keep a notebook with you while you are at Disney. I came up with a lot of ideas while I was at the parks that I probably would not have come up with once I got back home.

  1. I know you use social networking (Twitter/Facebook) and post very regularly.  How do you feel creating a good relationship with your fellow bloggers has effected your blog?
Like I said earlier, I think it is vital to your blog to have a relationship with other bloggers. I have had people refer others to my blog because they knew my content could help this particular reader. Having these friendships benefits everyone. If they have a reader who uses a wheelchair, they know that I would be happy to help them out. At the same time, if I have a reader that is traveling with a toddler, I know exactly where to send them.
  1. What is your favorite Disney Movie?  Why?
Man, I keep answering these questions too soon! Favorite animated is Alice in Wonderland. I just love the story of Alice and the characters are some of my favorites. I am also a big fan of Tangled. Live action would have to be Mary Poppins. If I am having a bad day, its the movie I play to make me feel better. Spoonful of Sugar is my Soft Kitty. (Who gets that reference?)
  1. Do you have a Disney Vacation tip you would like to share with our readers?
Have a plan. There is so much to do at Walt Disney World that you need to have an idea of what you want to accomplish, especially if you are traveling during a busy time of year. I also try to do at least one new thing every vacation.

  1. Anything you would like to add?
I would just like to thank Donna for this opportunity. I have learned so much from Mentoring Mondays so being asked to participate has been awesome. The Disney blogging community is such an awesome group of people. I am amazed daily how giving and caring everyone is.

Thanks Melissa!! I was so happy to have you here today!! I almost forgot, GO BRAVES!!
Be sure to check out Melissa on her own blog, or at one of the many places she contributes to, you won't be disappointed.  I hope you all have a Magical Day!
Donna Kay
